Texas Gun Laws

Texas is Renowned For Being Gun-Friendly, But That's Not The Whole Story.

Possessing a Firearm in Texas

In Texas, individuals who are at least 18 years old can possess firearms, including rifles and shotguns. Handgun possession is restricted to individuals who are at least 21 years old, with a few exceptions (e.g., active-duty military members). Convicted felons, individuals with certain domestic violence convictions, and those with certain mental health conditions are prohibited from possessing firearms.

Firearms Purchase in Texas

Texas does not require individuals to obtain a permit or license to purchase rifles, shotguns, or other long guns. To purchase a handgun from a licensed firearm dealer, buyers must undergo a background check and complete the appropriate paperwork, including the Federal Form 4473. Private sales of firearms, including handguns, do not require background checks or a permit.

Open Carry of Firearms in Texas

In Texas, individuals who are at least 18 years old and legally eligible to possess firearms can openly carry long guns in public, except in certain restricted areas such as schools, government buildings, and private property where it is prohibited.

Do You Need a CCW Permit to Carry a Handgun in Texas?

To carry a handgun in a concealed manner, a person must obtain a License to Carry (LTC) issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Applicants must be at least 21 years old (or 18 for active-duty military) and meet specific eligibility requirements, including a background check and completion of a training course. The LTC allows both open and concealed carry of handguns, except in restricted areas such as schools, government buildings, hospitals, and private property where it is prohibited.
