Who Can Own a Gun in Maine?
In Maine, individuals who are at least 18 years old and not prohibited by state or federal law can possess firearms. There is no permit or license required for the possession of rifles, shotguns, or handguns.
Purchasing a Gun in Maine?
To purchase a firearm in Maine, individuals must be at least 18 years old for long guns (rifles and shotguns) and 21 years old for handguns. Private sales or transfers of firearms between unlicensed individuals do not require a background check. However, when purchasing a firearm from a licensed firearms dealer, a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is mandatory.
Concealed Carry
Maine is a "shall-issue" state for concealed carry permits, meaning that if an applicant meets the statutory requirements, the issuing authority must issue the permit. To carry a concealed handgun in public, individuals must obtain a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) from their local municipal issuing authority or the Maine State Police. The minimum age to apply for a CHP is 18 years old for residents and 21 years old for non-residents.
