Firearms Laws in Indiana
Possession
In Indiana, individuals who are at least 18 years old and not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms can generally own and possess firearms. However, individuals under the age of 18 may possess firearms with the consent of a parent or guardian for lawful purposes, such as hunting or target shooting.
Purchasing a Gun in Indiana
To purchase a handgun from a licensed firearms dealer in Indiana, individuals must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the state. For long guns (rifles and shotguns), the minimum age is also 18, but residency is not a requirement. Private sales of firearms between individuals are allowed in Indiana without going through a licensed dealer. Indiana requires a background check for all firearm purchases from licensed dealers. The background check is conducted through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which determines whether the buyer is prohibited by state or federal law from owning a firearm.
Can I Carry a Gun in Indiana?
Indiana is a "shall issue" state when it comes to concealed carry permits. This means that as long as applicants meet the necessary requirements, the state is required to issue them a license to carry a handgun concealed. To obtain a handgun license, applicants must be at least 18 years old (or 16 with parental consent), have a valid identification document, complete an application, and pay the required fees. Indiana also recognizes permits from other states, allowing non-residents to carry concealed firearms if they have a valid out-of-state permit. Additionally, Indiana allows for the open carry of firearms without a license.
