How Do I Buy a Gun In Iowa?
To purchase a handgun from a federally licensed dealer, individuals must obtain a permit to acquire. This permit is issued by the sheriff of the county where the individual resides and requires a background check. The permit is valid for one year and allows the purchase of multiple handguns during that time. There is no permit required for purchasing rifles or shotguns. All firearm sales by licensed dealers, require a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This applies to both handguns and long guns. However, private sales between individuals who are not licensed dealers do not require a background check.
Is Concealed Carry Legal in Iowa?
Iowa is a "shall issue" state when it comes to concealed carry permits. To carry a concealed handgun, individuals must obtain a permit to carry weapons (PCW) from their local sheriff's office. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and meet specific requirements, including completion of a training course. Iowa also offers non-resident permits to individuals who meet the qualifications.
