Who Can Own a Gun in Kentucky?
Kentucky generally allows individuals who are 18 years or older to possess firearms. However, there are restrictions for certain individuals, such as convicted felons, individuals with domestic violence convictions, and those subject to restraining orders. They are generally prohibited from possessing firearms.
Firearm Purchasing
In Kentucky, there is no requirement for a permit to purchase firearms. Private sales of firearms are allowed without a background check. Federal restrictions on certain individuals, such as felons, still apply.
How Do You Get a Concealed Carry Permit in Kentucky?
Kentucky is a "shall issue" state for concealed carry permits. Residents who are at least 21 years old (18 for active-duty military personnel) and meet specific criteria can apply for a concealed carry permit through their local sheriff's office. Non-residents who work in Kentucky can also apply. The permit allows for the concealed carry of a handgun or other deadly weapon.
Open Carry
Kentucky generally allows the open carry of firearms without a permit.
Stand Your Ground
Kentucky has a "stand your ground" law, which means that individuals are not obligated to retreat before using force, including deadly force, if they reasonably believe it is necessary to protect themselves or others from imminent harm or death.
