Louisiana law as it pertains to firearms
Firearm Possession
Individuals must be at least 18 years old to possess a firearm. However, the possession of handguns is restricted to individuals who are at least 21 years old. Certain individuals are prohibited from possessing firearms, including convicted felons, individuals under domestic violence restraining orders, and those adjudicated as mentally ill.
Firearm Purchasing
Louisiana law does not require a background check for private sales of firearms. However, for commercial sales, federal law mandates that licensed firearms dealers conduct background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). There is no state-mandated waiting period for purchasing firearms in Louisiana.
Is Open Carry Legal in Louisiana?
Louisiana allows the open carry of firearms without a permit, as long as the person is at least 18 years old and not prohibited from possessing firearms.
Concealed Carry
Louisiana is a shall-issue state for concealed carry permits. To obtain a concealed handgun permit (CHP), applicants must be at least 21 years old, complete a training course, and meet other eligibility requirements. CHP holders may carry concealed firearms throughout the state, with some exceptions such as schools, government buildings, and certain establishments that post signs prohibiting firearms.
