Laws Regarding Firearms in Connecticut.

Firearms Purchasing

In Connecticut, individuals must obtain a permit to purchase handguns, shotguns, and rifles. To apply for a permit, individuals must be at least 21 years old for handguns and 18 years old for long guns. They must complete an application through the local law enforcement agency or the state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. The application process typically involves background checks, fingerprinting, and providing personal information. Applicants may also need to complete a safety training course. There is a waiting period of at least 14 days for all firearm purchases, regardless of the type. Certain individuals are prohibited from purchasing firearms, including those convicted of certain crimes, individuals subject to restraining orders, those with certain mental health conditions, and individuals with certain misdemeanor convictions.

Firearms Possession

Connecticut requires a permit to carry both concealed handguns and long guns. The state offers both an "open carry" permit and a "concealed carry" permit. To obtain a permit, individuals must meet certain eligibility requirements, including being at least 21 years old for handguns and 18 years old for long guns. Connecticut also has an Ar15 ban, which includes specific firearm models and certain features. Possession of Ar15s is generally prohibited unless an individual possessed the weapon before a specific date and registered it with the state.

Firearms Carry

To carry a firearm outside of one's home or place of business, Connecticut generally requires a concealed carry permit. Open carry without a permit is generally prohibited. The process for obtaining a concealed carry permit involves an application, background check, fingerprinting, and completion of a firearms training course.

Connecticut also allows for the temporary carrying of handguns without a permit under certain circumstances, such as while participating in a shooting competition, attending a firearms training course, or transporting firearms between locations for lawful purposes.
