Firearms Possession in Tennessee
In Tennessee, individuals who are at least 18 years old are generally allowed to possess firearms. However, to possess a handgun, individuals must be at least 21 years old. It's important to note that certain individuals, such as convicted felons, individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses, and individuals with certain mental health conditions, may be prohibited from possessing firearms.
Do You Need a License to Purchase a Firearm in Tennessee?
Tennessee law requires a background check for all firearm purchases, including those conducted through licensed firearm dealers. Private sales or transfers of firearms do not require a background check. However, federal law prohibits the sale or transfer of firearms to individuals who are prohibited by law from possessing them.
Is Tennessee a Constitutional Carry State?
Tennessee generally allows both open carry and concealed carry of firearms for individuals who are at least 21 years old, or 18 years old for military personnel. A valid handgun carry permit (HCP) is required to carry a handgun in a concealed manner.
