Is Idaho a Gun Friendly State?
Firearms Ownership
In Idaho, individuals who are at least 18 years old can own rifles, shotguns, and other long guns. There is no state registration requirement for firearms.
Firearms Purchase
Idaho law allows individuals who are at least 18 years old to purchase rifles, shotguns, and other long guns from licensed dealers. For handguns, the minimum age for purchase is 18 from private sellers or 21 from licensed dealers. Private sales or transfers of firearms do not require a background check.
Firearms Possession
Idaho allows the possession of firearms for lawful purposes. However, certain restrictions exist, such as prohibiting the possession of firearms by convicted felons, individuals with domestic violence convictions, or those subject to certain domestic violence protective orders. Additionally, individuals who have been adjudicated as mentally ill or committed to a mental institution may be prohibited from possessing firearms.
Do I Need a Permit to Carry a Gun in Idaho?
Idaho is a "shall issue" state for concealed carry permits. Residents who are at least 21 years old and not disqualified from possessing firearms can apply for a concealed weapons license (CWL). Non-residents who are eligible to possess firearms in their home state may also apply. The CWL allows the concealed carry of handguns in public places, except for certain restricted areas like government buildings, schools, and private property where firearms are prohibited. *As of July, 2017
SB1389 made it lawful for residents 21 years of age and older to conceal carry without a permit.
Open Carry
Idaho generally allows the open carry of firearms without a permit for individuals who are at least 18 years old and not disqualified from possessing firearms.
