Firearms laws in Hawaii
Firearm Purchasing
All firearms purchases, including rifles, shotguns, and handguns, require a permit. To obtain a permit, individuals must apply with their local police department and undergo a background check. Hawaii has a "may issue" policy, meaning the police chief has discretion in granting permits. The applicant must demonstrate urgency or need for self-defense. *Unconstitutional
There is a mandatory 14-day waiting period for all firearm purchases. Background checks are required for all firearm sales, including those conducted at gun shows, private sales, and transfers. Hawaii is a point of contact state for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), and all firearms dealers must conduct background checks through this system.
Firearm Possession

Firearms must be registered with the County Police Department within 72 hours of acquisition. Individuals must be at least 21 years old to possess a handgun and 18 years old for long guns.
