Overview of Firearms Laws in New Hampshire
Firearms Possession
In New Hampshire, individuals who are at least 18 years old can possess firearms. There is no state permit required for possessing rifles, shotguns, or handguns. However, federal restrictions still apply, such as prohibitions on convicted felons, certain domestic violence offenders, and individuals adjudicated as mentally ill.
Firearms Purchase
To purchase a firearm in New Hampshire, individuals must be at least 18 years old for rifles and shotguns, and 21 years old for handguns. There is no permit or license required for purchasing firearms from private sellers or dealers. However, federal background checks are conducted through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) at the time of purchase.
Is New Hampshire a Constitutional Carry State?
New Hampshire is a "shall issue" state for concealed carry permits. Residents who are at least 18 years old can apply for a concealed carry license, while non-residents must be at least 21 years old. The permit is issued by the local police chief or the New Hampshire State Police. Applicants must demonstrate that they are of good character (*Unconstitutional) and meet other eligibility requirements. However, New Hampshire law allows both residents and non-residents to carry a firearm openly without a permit. *Since February 22nd, 2017 New Hampshire has been A Constitutional Carry State
It's worth noting that while New Hampshire generally allows open carry without a permit, certain locations and circumstances may restrict the open carry of firearms. These restricted areas can include schools, government buildings, and private properties that prohibit firearms.
